Jane Tsushima High School Art Award 2023

In 2019, the San Leandro Art Association developed a $500 grant for graduating high school students in the San Leandro Unified School District who will be studying art in their continuing higher education. The grant is named after Jane Tsushima who has been an active member since 1975. She is currently 102 years old and continues to be an inspiration to SLAA members to explore art throughout our lives. Due to the Pandemic we gave out the first award in 2022 to Catalina Landeau. In 2023, Bryan Ochoa Mendez was selected by a vote of the high school art teachers based upon four criteria: 1. Passionate about art and continuing to study art in college. 2. Hardworking and warm in nature/Collaborative. 3. Needing the financial support to pursue their career in art. 4. Having an exceptional talent. Bryan came to the April 2023 meeting with his aunt, Vilma Mendez and his young cousin. He recieved the check from Jane, also in attendance with her family, and gave a short presentation of three of his favorite art creations explaining the the processes and sources for each one. In August, he will be heading to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) where he will be studying animation basics such as 2d and 3d digital and the stop motion technique. The San Leandro Art Association wishes him well as he moves forward with his art education.

“It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”
