August 9, 2022 Demonstration by Mary Curtis Ratcliff

Mary Curtis Ratcliff was a sculpture student at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1960s. She then went on to become a founder of the Videofreex, a pioneering experimental video collective in New York. Since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1970s, she has explored sculpture, mixed media, and two dimensional work. Ratcliff's work has been in 35 solo exhibitions and more than 150 group exhibitions in the United States, Europe, New Zealand, China and Japan.

Ratcliff’s work begins with taking a photograph. By manipulating material and form, she transforms images into three dimensional kinetic sculptures with exploratory shape and color. In this presentation, she will discuss her process including specific techniques of digital inkjet printing and adding color with acrylic, alcohol ink and Pēbēo. She will also share her method of constructing a sculptural object out of those photographs focusing on suspension, motion, and shadow.
