Ruey Lin Syrop received a BA degree in Fine Art from National Taiwan Normal University, and taught art at a Taipei high school for three years. In 1988, she got married, immigrated to the United States, and settled in Hayward, California.
She earned an AS degree in Electronic Engineering at Chabot Community College, and worked as an integrated circuit layout designer in Silicon Valley for 20 years. Her work in that field was challenging and very technical, yet also allowed for creativity.
After leaving her high-tech job in 2016, she became a full-time artist and enrolled in art classes at UC Berkeley Extension (UCBX) to enrich her ideas and skills. In 2018 she obtained a post-baccalaureate certificate in visual art from UCBX. She continues studying with her mentor, Larry Robinson, from UCBX. In addition, Ruey and her UCBX classmates founded an art group called the 7+1 Collective. Their art mission is to focus on social and environmental issues.
Ruey works with materials such as oils, acrylics, pastels, mixed media, and Chinese ink, and takes photos as well. She has been a participating member of the Hayward Arts Council, A.R.T. Inc., Sun Gallery, Hayward Area Historical Society, and group art exhibitions for many years, including solo exhibitions in San Francisco and Oakland. She will be demonstrating Frottage, a French word for rubbing, which involves creating a rubbing on paper from a textured surface using a pencil or other drawing material. She will share a video and will demonstrate the technique for participants. There will be a hands-on opportunity at the end of the demonstration for those who wish to try the technique.
